The Israeli government has taken a significant step in streamlining the process of renewing biometric passports. As of Tuesday, many Israeli citizens can order a fresh passport online without the need to visit an Interior Ministry office, eliminating the months-long waiting lists for in-person appointments.
“This online service is a dramatic step towards improving the accessibility and efficiency of our services,” said Interior Minister Moshe Arbel, emphasizing the government’s commitment to modernizing its systems.
Eligibility Criteria for the Online Renewal Service
The pilot service is currently available to Israelis aged 21 to 60 who already possess a biometric passport or a biometric national identity card. However, there are certain restrictions in place:
Existing biometric passports must have either expired within the previous six months or will expire during the next year.
Requests can only be made from a computer physically located within Israel.
Users must submit a new digital photograph that meets the biometric requirements.
Name changes cannot be requested through this online service.
Limitations: Five-Year Validity and US Visa Waiver Program
It is important to note that the passports obtained through the online renewal service will have a validity period of five years, rather than the standard ten-year duration. The Interior Ministry’s application website clarifies that Israelis wishing to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program must have a 10-year passport, which can only be obtained by visiting a ministry office in person.
Streamlining Identity Card Renewal Process
In addition to passport renewal, the new system also offers an online service for ordering a new biometric national identity card. Israeli citizens aged 18 and above can take advantage of this service to update their national ID cards.
Addressing the Appointment Backlog
The introduction of the online renewal services comes as a response to the dearth of available appointments at Interior Ministry sites across the country. This problem was exacerbated by networks of hackers and bots that captured thousands of appointments and resold them at exorbitant prices, causing a severe lack of availability.
Last year, the Interior Ministry conducted a month-long trial during which people could visit ministry offices without prior appointments to address the backlog in passport applications. However, this led to long queues as Israelis flocked to the sites.
Enhancing Accessibility and Convenience
The online renewal service aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for Israeli citizens, allowing them to renew their biometric documents from the comfort of their homes. By eliminating the need for in-person visits, the government hopes to alleviate the strain on Interior Ministry offices and provide a more streamlined experience.

While the online renewal service addresses a pressing need, it is essential to note that first-time registration for biometric documents, whether passports or identity cards, must still be done at Interior Ministry sites, where applicants are digitally fingerprinted and their faces photographed.
