Effective October 1st, the fee for the Global Entry program, a popular option for pre-approved, low-risk travelers, will rise from $100 to $120. However, the application and approval process for Global Entry can be time-consuming, spanning several months and requiring an in-person interview. This has led the CBP to suggest an alternative for those looking to avoid the extra $20 fee and potential delays: the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app.

The free MPC app allows travelers to submit their photo, customs declaration, and passport information in advance, enabling them to access dedicated lanes for a swifter passage through immigration. As the CBP notes on its website, “Travelers who successfully use the MPC passport app will no longer have to complete a paper form and may be provided a designated queue, resulting in shorter wait times, less congestion, and efficient processing.”
“This [the MPC app] clearly has impacts on the ecosystem because business travelers and leisure travelers behave differently and have different needs,” explained Richard Wazacz, CEO at foreign exchange company Travelex. “Prioritizing the needs of leisure travelers should be a top priority for businesses in the travel industry.”

Gen X and millennial consumers account for a significant portion of travel expenditure, 31% and 28% respectively, highlighting the importance of catering to their preferences.
“There’s been a notable shift in the business-leisure travel mix, with a greater number of consumers compared to business travelers,” Wazacz said, citing reports from airlines like British Airways that have observed a decline in business class bookings alongside a surge in economy and economy plus bookings.
