Passport Application Process Made Easy

For families unable to visit the post office during regular business hours, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is offering a convenient solution. The Gulf Shores Post Office will host a Passport Fair on Saturday, March 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing an opportunity for individuals to efficiently obtain their passports.

“Passport fairs are an excellent way for the USPS to serve the community,” remarked Sarah Johnson, a postal service spokesperson. “We understand the need for flexible options, and this event aims to accommodate those with busy schedules.”

Appointments are mandatory for the Passport Fair and can be scheduled by calling 251-968-2231. Applicants must come prepared with the necessary documentation, including proof of U.S. citizenship, a photocopy of the selected proof, and valid identification.

“Proper preparation is crucial for a smooth passport application process,” advised Johnson. “We encourage applicants to gather all required documents beforehand to ensure a hassle-free experience.”

Acceptable Forms of Identification

The U.S. Department of State accepts various forms of identification for passport applications. These include:
  • Previous U.S. passport or passport card
  • Certificate of naturalization or citizenship with an identifiable photo
  • Valid driver’s license (not a temporary or learner’s permit)
  • Official U.S. military or military dependent ID card
  • Government employee ID card
  • Current valid foreign passport

Passport Photo Requirements

A recent 2″ by 2″ color passport photograph is also necessary. Applicants can have their photo taken at the post office for $15 or obtain it from local stores like Staples, CVS, or the UPS Store. Self-taken and printed photographs adhering to passport guidelines are also acceptable.

Fees and Payment Methods

All applications require a $35 acceptance fee payable to the postmaster. Additional costs, which should be paid via check or money order to the U.S. State Department, vary based on the applicant’s age and the desired product:

Adult:

  • Passport book: $130
  • Passport card: $30
  • Passport book and card: $160

Children under 16:

  • Passport book: $100
  • Passport card: $15
  • Passport book and card: $115

Parental Consent for Minors

If an applicant is under 16, both parents must be present. In the absence of one parent, a notarized authorization from the absent parent is required.
